Provincial Qualifying Exam (PQE)

Once learners have completed the coursework for the Practice Course, they are eligible to write the Provincial Qualifying Exam (PQE).  A grade of 70% or higher on the PQE is required to be eligible for licensing as a mortgage associate.

When am I eligible to write the exam?

If you are a classroom student, you can write the exam if:

  • You have attended at least 90% of the classes.
  • You have not exceeded one year from the date of enrolment in the Fundamentals course.  In other words, you must complete both courses (i.e., Fundamentals and Practice courses), as well as the respective PQEs, within one year of enrolment.
  • You have an Exam Authorization Form.  (This form will be handed out on the last day of class).

If you are an online student, you can write the exam if:

  • You have achieved a grade of 70% or higher on all the chapter review quizzes. 
  • You have received an email stating that you are eligible to write the exam.
  • You have not exceeded one year from the date of enrolment in the Fundamentals course.  In other words, you must complete both courses (i.e., Fundamentals and Practice courses), as well as the respective PQEs, within one year of enrolment.
  • You have an Exam Authorization Form.  (This form was mailed to you with your Mortgage Tables Book shortly after registration).

What is on the exam?

If you enrolled in the Mortgage Associates Program, after April 1, 2011, your exam will consist of 77 multiple-choice questions. Learners have a maximum of 2 hours to complete the exam.  Exam questions are based solely on the content of the course material and are not reflective of current market conditions.

Each chapter is represented as follows on the exam:

What do I need to take to the exam?

  • A valid Exam Authorization Form (EAF)
  • A passport photo
  • A form of photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc)
  • VISA or MasterCard to pay the exam fee online. AMEX and PayPal are available at some exam centres. Contact the applicable exam centre for accepted methods of payment.
  • A non-programmable calculator (optional). Students are NOT permitted to use a real estate or mortgage calculator such as the Canadian Qualifier Calculator.

 

You are NOT permitted to use your own Mortgage Tables Book (i.e., brown book) during the exam. You will be provided access to a pdf of pages from the brown book needed to answer the math questions for the purposes of the exam. You will also be provided access to the Insurance Premium Table.

You may bring your own simple calculator to assist with mathematical computation, or you may choose to use the calculator provided in the software.

How much does it cost?

Cost of the PQE for the Practice of Mortgage Brokerage Course is $125 + GST and is payable at the time of testing.

Where do I write the exam?

You may write your exam at any AMBA-approved exam centre in Alberta.  Contact the exam centre directly for information regarding scheduled exam dates and to register for the exam.

Exam dates may NOT correspond with your program expiry date.  Ensure that you schedule your exam within the one-year time frame for the program.

What if I don’t pass?

Students are permitted one re-write of the exam. Students will be automically authorized for a re-write if they are unsuccessful at their first attempt at the exam, and will be able to access their re-write after 48 hours have elapsed. Access to the re-write exam will require:

  • Exam Authorization Form (EAF). You will use the same user ID and password that was used on the first attempt at the exam.
  • Passport photo
  • Photo ID for identification verification
  • Payment of $125 by Visa or MasterCard. AMEX and PayPal are available at some exam centres.

If the second attempt at the PQE is unsuccessful, it will be necessary to re-enrol in the Mortgage Associates Program.

Transcripts & Certificates of Completion

The Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) will receive proof of your exam completion automatically.  Transcripts and/or Certificates of Completion are available at no charge, upon request.  Please contact the AMBA office if you would like a copy of your proof of completion at education@amba.ca.
