Alberta’s Commercial Farms, by the Numbers — and Where to Find Them

The Scale of Alberta Agriculture

  • 41,500+ farms call Alberta home — nearly 22% of all farms in Canada.
  • Alberta farms reported $22.2 billion in farm operating revenue, more than any other province and over a quarter of Canada’s total.
  • Alberta’s total farm cash receipts now sit at $23.1 billion annually.
  • The average Alberta farm spans over 1,180 acres.
  • Alberta holds the largest cattle herd in Canada (over 43% of the national total) and cattle alone generate an average of $5.5 billion a year in revenue.
  • Alberta grows about 29% of Canada’s entire canola crop, worth $3.7 billion in cash receipts, in a country that produces 22% of the world’s canola supply.
  • Livestock accounts for 40% of Alberta’s total farm cash receipts, the single largest share of provincial ag revenue.

The Number That Matters Most for Brokers

Farms with $2 million or more in annual revenue make up just 4% of Alberta operations, yet they account for over 60% of all farm revenue in the province. A small slice of commercial, food-producing operations represents the majority of financial activity in Alberta agriculture. These are established businesses carrying real estate, equipment, and financing needs well beyond a typical residential file, and they’re not always able to be served by conventional lending.

Where to Find These Clients

Some of this business can come to you. When a commercial farm operator searches online for financing help, they’re often typing the exact same terms as any other borrower (i.e. “mortgage broker near me,” “farm loan,” “agricultural financing options.”) But if your website and online presence don’t signal that you can help with ag files, that search traffic quietly moves on to someone who does. If ag lending is a space you want to build consistent business in, it’s worth treating like any other specialty: reflect it in your marketing. A dedicated page on your website, a line in your bio, or a few social posts about farm financing can be enough to signal that you’re a broker who understands this market.

However a lot of this business isn’t searching at all; it’s sitting inside relationships that already exist. Some of your best opportunities are proactive:

  • Farm equipment dealerships (New Holland, Case IH, John Deere, and similar) — often among the first to hear when a client is expanding, upgrading, or facing a cash crunch. A coffee with a dealership’s finance manager can open a steady pipeline.
  • Agronomists and crop input suppliers — deeply embedded in the day-to-day financial rhythm of a farm operation, and often trusted advisors long before a lender is.
  • Accountants specializing in agriculture — frequently the first call a farm client makes when financing questions come up. A short intro call to a handful of local ag-focused accounting firms can pay off.
  • Land agents and farm real estate brokers — a natural partner for purchase-side referrals, especially on land and auction deals.
  • Agricultural trade shows and county fairs (Agri-Trade, Farm Progress Show, county ag society events) — high-density opportunities to meet operators and the professionals who serve them, in person, in one place.

The common thread: commercial ag is a relationship-driven world. Showing up consistently in these spaces, even just a handful of times a year, tends to matter more than any single ad or listing.

You Don’t Need to Be an Ag Expert

Here’s the good news: none of this requires you to become a farm finance specialist yourself in order to recognize a good opportunity. You just need to know a commercial ag file when you see one, and where to send it.

That’s exactly the role Glengarry plays. We work exclusively with commercial, food-producing operations, helping strong operators access financing when their situation falls outside conventional lending criteria. When you bring us a file, our team does the heavy lifting on the ag-specific underwriting, while you stay focused on what you already do best.
