MCAP and Broker Partners Support Habitat for Humanity Canada

Access to safe, affordable housing remains a growing challenge for many Canadians, including in Alberta. Rising housing costs, economic uncertainty, and limited housing supply have made homeownership increasingly out of reach for hard-working families across the province and the country.

As housing affordability pressures continue to grow, the impact extends beyond individual households and into communities, local economies, and the broader housing ecosystem. Stable housing plays a critical role in financial security, family well-being, and long-term economic participation.

For professionals in Alberta’s mortgage and housing industry, this reality underscores the importance of not only supporting clients on their path to homeownership, but also giving back to the communities we serve. It’s within this context that MCAP and its broker partners have come together to support Habitat for Humanity Canada.

Through partnerships that combine industry expertise with community impact, MCAP and our broker partners are united by a shared purpose: supporting Canadians on their journey toward homeownership. By joining forces with Habitat for Humanity Canada, we’re able to expand that impact, creating meaningful opportunities for hard-working families to find a stable, secure place to call their own.

Throughout the year, MCAP provides different opportunities for our broker partners to get involved and support Habitat. One of those initiatives is The Importance of Home, a unique program that allows brokers to support Habitat financially and through hands-on experiences like Habitat Build Days.

Habitat Build Day in Calgary, Alberta
One memorable event was in March 2023, when MCAP teamed up with broker partners from Mortgage Connection for a Habitat Build Day in Calgary. Robby Aurora, Managing Partner at Mortgage Connection spoke with us about his experience at Build Day and why participating was important for him and his team.

“Providing the opportunity for affordable homeownership for hard-working, low-income families is something that resonates with our entire team at Mortgage Connection,” says Aurora. “As mortgage brokers, we come across a variety of different client demographics and scenarios, and to be able to have our team come out and help work with Habitat for Humanity is truly special for us.”

The harsh winter weather makes builds more challenging, but also more impactful. “It was a reminder for all of us there how grateful we should be to have the opportunity and fortune to be able to serve,” says Aurora. “A reminder of how many Canadians do not have the basic necessity of shelter.”

Giving Back Is One of Our Core Values
For MCAP, the brokers they work with are highly valued partners who enhance the experience of homeownership for their clients, helping to facilitate the goals of so many Canadians. Their partnership in Build Days is yet another reflection of the strength and importance of this leadership.

Build Days give teams the chance to step back and recognize the impact of their efforts. While this team focused mainly on framing work, everyone who participated understood they were building more than a house, they were building team spirit, shared memories, and the future home of a deserving Canadian. “Homeownership is so much more than a house,” says Lee-Ann McEllister, Senior Director, Sales at MCAP. “It is stability, safety, and a place to call home.”

Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to help families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership, a mission MCAP has proudly supported since 2000. Since 2021, our broker partners have donated more than $120 thousand through The Importance of Home initiative.  With MCAP’s matching donations, the total funds raised are just under $240 thousand for Habitat for Humanity.

Together, MCAP, our broker partners, and Habitat for Humanity continue to help build more than homes, we help build brighter futures.

At the Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association, we acknowledge that our work in the housing industry is deeply connected to the land we call home. We recognize and pay tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10.  We also honour the Métis Nation of Alberta.  As we work to facilitate homeownership in Alberta, we remember that we operate on land that has been home to Indigenous peoples for generations.
